私は、宝石に囲まれて生活をしている。この世の全てが、ある時「宝石だ」と気づいたからです。どの人も、どの景色を見ても、かけがえのない私の宝石です。それは、幼い頃に繰り返し読んだ、アラビアンナイトの物語の呪文に気づいたことと同じことかも知れません。

物語では、「ひらけゴマ」と唱えると、素晴らしい宝石の部屋の扉が開きました。

その後ずっと経ってから、水上勉の文章を読んでいたときに、この呪文の謎が解けたのでした。水上氏がお寺の修行時代に、老師から「この胡麻の皮を剥きなさい」と黒ゴマを大量に渡された時の話が書いてありました。どうしてもその方法がわからない水上氏は、一粒一粒黒い胡麻を剥き始めたのでした。老師は笑って「こうするのだ」とすり鉢と水を使って皮を剥き、皮を水に浮かせて分離させる方法を見せたのでした。この話を読んだ時、「ひらけゴマ」とはこのことだったのか！と感動しました。
実はこの世の中は簡単な方法で全てが解決するのに、その方法を知らないだけなのかも知れません。

アラビアンナイトは、「ひらけゴマ」の呪文を知ったことで、宝石のありかを知ったのです。この作品は、そのことを伝える作品です。

I live surrounded by jewels. This is because one day I came to realize that everything in this world is a gem. Every person I meet and every landscape I see is an irreplaceable jewel to me. It feels much like unlocking the secret behind the spell from One Thousand and One Nights, a story I read over and over in my childhood.

In that tale, chanting “Open Sesame” would open the doors to a hidden room filled with magnificent treasures.

Decades later, while reading a passage by the writer Tsutomu Minakami, the mystery of this spell was finally solved for me. He recounted his youth as a novice monk at a temple, when his master handed him a mountain of black sesame seeds and instructed him to “peel off their skins.” Having no idea how to accomplish this, Minakami began peeling them one by one by hand. The master smiled and showed him the true way: by using a mortar and water, the hulls separated easily and floated to the top. When I read this story, I was struck with amazement—so this is what “Open Sesame” really meant! Perhaps all the difficulties in this world have simple solutions; we simply do not yet know the method.

In One Thousand and One Nights, discovering the spell “Open Sesame” revealed where the treasures lay hidden. This artwork is an expression of that revelation.
