宝石の空

説明

わたしのドローイングに、「マイ・ダイヤモンド」という作品があります。この作品は、今アメリカのギャラリーで取り扱われているものです。この１枚の紙に書いたものを、人は「ハハハ、ただの紙に描いた絵じゃないか」と口を揃えていうことでしょう。でもそれは違います。よくタイトルを見てください。「これはダイヤモンドです」とは書いてありません。「マイ・ダイヤモンド」なのです。私は二度とこの作品は描けない。アナログなアートとは、そういうものです。だから、やがて、ダイヤモンドと同じくらい、あるいはそれ以上に価値のあるものとなるのです。

さて、版画はどうでしょう？同じような作品が、限定枚数のナンバーがついていれば、ed.1/20はこの世にたった１枚しかないという意味では、同じことです。そして、この版画の意味することとは？

空は誰の頭上にも広がる、無価値のものだと私たちは思って生活していることでしょう。しかし、この空を見上げて、涙したり、誓いを立てたり、「今日はいい気分だ」と笑顔になることもできるのです。そのような空がどれほど私たちを幸せにしてくれているか計り知れません。

私はいつも夕方になると、自宅の屋上から空を見上げる時間を大切にしています。一番星を見つけたり、月がのぞく雲を眺めたりする時、この空もかけがえのない私の宝石なのだ、と感謝せずにはいられません。

Among my drawings, there is a piece titled My Diamond, which is currently represented by a gallery in the United States. Looking at this single sheet of paper, many might laugh and say, “Ha, isn’t it just a drawing on a piece of paper?” But that is not so. Look closely at the title. It does not say “This is a diamond.” It says “My Diamond.” I can never recreate this exact work again—that is the essence of physical, analog art. And that is why, in time, it acquires a value equal to, or even greater than, that of a diamond.

Now, what about printmaking? When an artwork is created in a limited edition with numbered impressions, each impression—such as ed. 1/10—is unique in the sense that no other sheet is exactly the same. So, what does this print signify?

In our daily lives, we often take the sky stretching above us for granted, viewing it as something without monetary value. Yet, looking up at this same sky, we might shed tears, make a quiet vow, or smile, feeling that “today is a good day.” The ways in which the sky enriches our lives are beyond measure.

Every evening, I cherish the time I spend looking up at the sky from my rooftop. Spotting the evening’s first star or watching the moon peek through the clouds, I am filled with gratitude—realizing that this sky, too, is an irreplaceable jewel of my own.
