029. Marcel Duchamp and the Readymade Revolution (Conceptual Art Series – Part 1)
In 1917, the French-American artist Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968) submitted a mass-produced porcelain urinal signed with the pseudonym “R. Mutt” to an unjuried exhibition in New York. Titled Fountain, the object was promptly rejected, yet it triggered the most radical transformation in 20th-century art history. With this single gesture, Duchamp introduced the concept of the “readymade”—an ordinary, manufactured item selected by the artist and relocated from its functional context into the aesthetic realm of a gallery.
Duchamp’s primary objective was to dismantle what he termed “retinal art”—art designed merely to please the eye through visual skill or painterly technique. Instead, he insisted that art should serve the mind. By selecting an existing object rather than crafting one by hand, Duchamp asserted that the fundamental essence of art lies not in manual dexterity or physical labor, but in the intellectual choice of the artist. The true artwork was no longer the physical object itself, but the new, challenging thought generated by its contextual displacement.
The readymade revolution completely redefined the parameters of artistic creation. It established that an artist could create meaning simply by choosing, naming, and framing an object, thereby prioritizing the idea (concept) over the physical medium. By liberating art from traditional craft and optical pleasure, Duchamp paved the way for Conceptual Art, forever changing how we define, value, and experience creative expression.
